If you have ever been to Bolinas, you first had to find it. The residents, passionate about keeping their homeland off the grid, each year remove the Bolinas 2 Miles sign from Highway 1, the only directional signage to their town. Many a backyard has been graced with these signs, crumbled, discarded but none the less a sign of victory of their on going efforts to preserve the uniqueness of this off the wall community. It’s become a bit of a tradition.
Another tradition is the 4th of July parade downtown. Festive, odd and clearly counter culture this annual event hosts everything from homemade floats, a nude Lady Liberty and a beer wagon, distributing free beer to parade watchers at 10:00 AM in the morning. And the day just got better after that.
